Afgelopen woensdag, 18 april, heeft de FBI een server in beslag genomen uit een serverpark in New York City gedeeld door Riseup Networks en May First/People Link. De in beslag genomen server werd beheerd door het European Counter Network (ECN), de oudste onafhankelijke ISP in Europa.

Inspired by Philippe Aigrain's Sharing, I got curious about the way different media and distribution methods have an impact on the diversity of content. In section 3.2 of his book, there's an interesting summary of how p2p networks have a much higher diversity of attention then regular (commercial) distribution channels. That is, instead of everyone downloading the same top-5 chart hits or blockbusters, in p2p networks we see attention going to a much broader variety of content.

Gezien de grote belangstelling waarin het thema recentelijk staat wil ik graag stilstaan bij wat we bedoelen met internetvrijheid. Internet lijkt een haast mythisch aura om zich heen te hebben als ware het een groot non-hierarchisch netwerk waarin iedereen openlijk en als gelijkwaardige met elkaar kan communiceren. Dat is vrij opmerkelijk voor een netwerk wat is ontstaan vanuit DARPA, een project van het amerikaans militair apparaat, en waarvan de infrastructuur nu vrijwel volledig in handen is van grote telco's.

Op 18 januari gingen duizenden websites, zoals wikipedia en Indymedia, op zwart vanwege SOPA/PIPA. ( https://www.indymedia.nl/node/1946 ) Dit waren wetten die in de verenigde staten zouden worden ingevoerd die de internetvrijheid zouden beperken. Die acties waren zo succesvol (en de wetten zo absurd) dat SOPA is tegengehouden. Maar nu komt de grote broer van SOPA meedoen: ACTA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement ) Dit nieuwe “verdrag" is in het geheim in elkaar geflanst, en al door de europese landen ondertekend.

TLDR; if your state censors thepiratebay.com, try http://www.br3in.nl (or http://p1r4t3.br3in.nl for extra l33t warez).

So BREIN has taken xs4all and ziggo (the two largest dutch ISP's) to court over blocking access to thepiratebay.com and it seems like they won. What this means is the following IP's will be blocked for xs4all and ziggo users:

194.71.107.15, 194.71.107.18, 194.71.107.19

And the following domainnames will have to be blocked as well (currently unsure on the technical details as to how this should be achieved):
